After the cognitive decline and subsequent death of her mother, Susan Magnus inherited a trove of family photographs and artifacts. Reflecting on these materials, the vulnerability of the pre-digital snapshots seemed emblematic of the fleeting nature of memory and the inevitable loss of loved ones we all experience. Moreover, the familial heirlooms and objects became not just repositories of sentimental recollection but reminders of the fugitive nature of all things. Exploring this residue from the landscape of her mother’s life began as a way for the artist to process grief and past events but soon developed into new projects inspired by this inheritance. In her most recent work, Magnus builds on the family archive by reconfiguring, manipulating, and transforming appropriated imagery and possessions to create alternative, enigmatic visual narratives.
