Susan Magnus was born in New York, NY. 

As an undergraduate, she studied at Parsons and The New School as well as the American University of Paris.  She received a B.F.A. with honors from Parsons and The New School, and a M.F.A. degree from Mills College after being awarded a Mills College Alumnae Scholarship to complete her thesis.  While at Mills, she studied with Sophie Calle, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Hung Lui, Tom Marioni, and Catherine Wagner.

She is the recipient of a Visual Arts Award from the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation, a Regional Fellowship from the Western States Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Jack and Gertrude Murphy Fine Arts Fellowship from the San Francisco Foundation.

Her work is included in a number of private and public collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum, the Oakland Museum of California, the Microsoft Corporation, the Oracle Corporation, and the Bank of America Corporation.

She has been a visiting professor at the San Francisco Art Institute, as well as a guest lecturer at Parsons and The New School, Mills College, and California College of the Arts.

A long time resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, she currently lives in Beacon, NY.
